All autopilots work on the same principle, they can steer the boat because they expect the rudder to move at a certain speed, whilst the rudder feedback indicates the position of the rudder the actual speed of movement is governed by the flow rate of the pump. Too fast and the pilot will oscillate or over shoot the desired setting and the boat "snake" out of control. Too slow and the boat will drift off course before the pilot has any effect. Of course there are always electronic adjustments within the pilot itself, and some allow you to control the speed of the pump, but these have limits and the rudder speed needs to fall within a certain parameters to give the electronic settings scope to cope with different sea states.
The rudder speed is measured as the time it takes to get from full lock port to full lock starboard, known as the "Hard over to Hard over" time. Auto learning pilots are particularly sensitive to hard over time.To achieve this ideal time the pump needs to be matched to the cylinder, for example a 1 litre per min pump (Raymarine Type 1 or our PR10) delivers 16.66cc per sec so would give a hard over to hard over time of 9 secs with a 150cc cylinder (Teleflex/Morse BA150) but you would need a Type 2 or PR20 if your cylinder was 300cc to achieve the same time.
